Thank you to everyone who came along to our Health and Wellbeing Open day last week.
It was an incredibly successful day, with lots of people attending and joining in with all the wonderful taster sessions.
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to shape this day into a success!
The Alice Cross was a bustling hive of activity on Wednesday the 25th of April, as it opened its doors for a successful health and wellbeing day.
The day started off with a Tai Chi session, combining deep and relaxing breathing with flowing movements, getting everyone ready for the day ahead.
Sally and the ladies from the 2 resident eastern dancing groups then combined forces to give us a marvellous display of dance and colour to a soundtrack of local superband Muse.
We were joined by Mayor Paul Burgess who gave a short speech about the Alice Cross and spoke about how wonderful the atmosphere in the room was and how fitting is was with the message of the centre. As one of the Mayors charities, the Alice Cross will benefit greatly from the hard work Paul and his wife Nicky have put in during his tenure as Mayor over the last year, and for that we are very thankful.
The day continued with a short talk from drinkwise agewell who are currently running a free 7 week wellbeing course at the Alice Cross. The talk was very informative and opened our eyes to what a unit of alcohol looks like compared to what we actually thought!
This was followed by an energetic Dancersise taster session from Marianne and her group, showing us that age is no boundary to keeping fit. A more sedate session followed with Pilates with Beth, and emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Sandra and the wonderful women from Wiggles and Giggles then gave us a fantastic display of eastern dance.
Pauline spoke about a great opportunity to lose weight and/or get fitter through a new programme called Trim Teign. Trim Teign will launch on Monday the 14th of May offering a range of sessions and activities to help you live a healthier and more active lifestyle. Come along to the Alice Cross from 12pm for a series of taster sessions! Emma then got everyone up and moving with a fantastic, fun and feel good Zumba gold session. The atmosphere was electric, with everyone laughing and dancing together. Zumba Gold is a fantastic low-intensity dance-based workout, which is perfect for older adults, guaranteed to make you giggle. Classes start at the Alice Cross on the 14th of May!
A wonderful buffet lunch prepared and served by our very own chef Nicky and her super team followed, giving an opportunity for people to mingle and chat.
Feedback on the day was great, with many people surprised at the variety of activities on offer at the Alice Cross. People were also surprised that we cater for anyone over the age of 50, and that we are not an old fashioned day centre! We hope this open day will encourage more people to use the centre and participate in some of the many active life programmes we offer.
Attendees were treated to massages and treatments from our resident therapists Caroline and Margaret, which went down very well. A nurse was also on hand to offer free health and wellbeing check ups, a service we would like to implement regularly in the future.
The day ended perfectly with a magical session of seated yoga with Lisa, leaving everyone in a relaxed state of zen.
Centre manager Julia Street thanked all of the hardworking volunteers and staff who made this day, and indeed every day at the Alice Cross so successful and a great place to be.
