🌊 Seawall Mile – Thursday, May 1st, 10am Meeting point: The Pier
Three Miles of Teignmouth
Teignmouth is full of history. This is explored in three special walks to contribute to the Alice Cross’s challenge of “Walk a Mile a Day in May”.
🪨 Granite Mile – Wednesday, May 7th, 6pm Meeting point: The Pier
Part of Teignmouth’s history is built on granite. This walk is a gentle stroll through the town following a series of granite markers which you probably walk past every day but have never noticed. Learn about connections to art, literature, music and more. Start and finish 6pm at the pier.
🌿 Cemetery Mile – Thursday, May 15th, 6pm Meeting point: Teignmouth Old Cemetery (at the buildings)
Teignmouth’s history is also marked by the lives of people buried in Teignmouth Old Cemetery. From Troy to the Titanic, from ice cream to drains, from TS Eliot to Keats, from comedy to tragedy there is a wealth of historical connections and memories. Start and finish 6pm at the cemetery buildings along the avenue joining Exeter Road and Higher Buckeridge Road.
📚 Keats Walk – Thursday, May 22nd, 6pm Meeting point: Meet outside TAAG, Northumberland Place, Teignmouth.
Try to imagine a very different Teignmouth of 207 years ago. It was in 1818 that Keats spent time in Teignmouth looking after his brother and completing some of his poetic works. This is a walk that Keats could well have taken, visiting places mentioned by him in his letters and with some poetry to set the scene. Start and finish 6pm in Northumberland Place outside TAAG.
