Teignmouth UK Town of Culture 2028

Why Teignmouth is bidding for UK Town of Culture 2028

The UK Government has launched the first ever UK Town of Culture competition which gives towns across the country the chance to celebrate their identity, creativity and community pride through a major cultural programme.

Towns are being invited to share their unique story, show how culture can be accessible to everyone, and demonstrate how they can successfully deliver a vibrant programme of arts, music and events.

The winning town will receive significant investment (around £3 million) to deliver a year-long programme in 2028, with additional funding and support for shortlisted places.

Teignmouth is going for this opportunity because our town already has a powerful cultural story. From our maritime heritage and working harbour, to our growing arts scene, live music, festivals and strong community spirit. The culture here is shaped by local people.

A Town of Culture bid is about more than events. It’s about bringing investment, creating opportunities for young people, supporting local artists and businesses, and building pride in our place. It’s also a chance to put Teignmouth on the national stage and celebrate the resilience and creativity that define our town.

By working together as residents, community groups, creatives and organisations,  we can showcase everything that makes Teignmouth special and shape an inspiring cultural future.
